Privacy Policy
Donor Privacy Policy
The Institute for Justice respects the privacy of our donors (both online and offline) and their choice not to have personal information shared with others. We do not and will not sell or rent donor information; however, occasionally we make donor mailing lists available to select, reputable nonprofits in return for donor lists from those organizations. This helps IJ continue to grow. In addition, we may provide donor information to companies that help IJ improve our fundraising efforts, such as mail service providers, online donation processing vendors, donor data management systems, and other services. We also disclose donor information as required by law.
Our donors may instruct that we exclude them from our own communications and/or exclude their information from the lists that we share with others for use in their fundraising or marketing purposes. All such requests will be implemented as soon as possible. Please direct these requests to privacy@staging.ij.org or by mail to: Donor Membership Department, Institute for Justice, 901 N. Glebe Road Ste. 900, Arlington, VA 22203.
The Institute for Justice may, from time to time, change this policy. If you would like to be notified when we do so, please contact privacy@staging.ij.org or at the address above.

Your privacy is important to the Institute for Justice.
The Institute for Justice (“IJ”) is committed to protecting the personal information you share with us. We have developed this privacy policy to explain how we collect, use, and safeguard your information. Please read it carefully so you understand how IJ handles your data.

This policy does not cover information collected by third parties, including websites that may be linked from our Websites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.
What Information Does IJ Collect?
We collect information in two ways: information you give us directly, and information we gather automatically when you visit our Websites.

IJ maintains a separate donor privacy policy, which is available [[here]]. That policy provides additional detail on how we handle donor information.
Information Collected Automatically
When you visit our Websites, we may automatically collect certain technical information, including your IP address, browser type, operating system, the pages you visit, the links you click, how you interact with our Websites, and other aspects of your use of the city. We use technologies such as cookies and pixel-based tracking to gather this information. We use it to understand who visits our Websites, improve the user experience, and display relevant content. We may also collect information from third parties, such as business partners.
How Does IJ Use My Information?
We use the information we collect to further our business and to advance IJ’s mission of defending individual rights, such as:
- To operate and improve our Websites
- To process your donations and provide tax receipts

Does IJ Share My Information?
IJ does not sell or rent your personal information or our supporter lists.
We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers: We work with trusted vendors who help us operate our Websites, process donations, send communications, and perform other services on our behalf. These providers are contractually required to protect your information and may only use it for the purposes we specify.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or legal process, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of IJ, our employees, our supporters, or the public.
- With your consent: We may share your information for any purpose you have specifically authorized.
We may share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot identify you personally without restriction.
If you prefer not to receive communications from us, you can update your preferences at any time (see “How Can I Manage My Communication Preferences?” below).
How Does IJ Protect My Information?
We take the security of your information seriously. When personal information is transmitted through our Websites, it is protected using industry-standard security technology, including Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. We work with payment processors that are compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS).
That said, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. We encourage you to take care when using public computers, unsecured wireless networks and other known security risks.
How Does IJ Use Cookies and Tracking Technologies?
Our Websites use cookies, pixels, and other technologies for our business purposes, such as to enhance your experience, measure the effectiveness of our communications, and understand how visitors use our Websites. We do not use these technologies to store payment or credit card information.
Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser settings to decline them. If you choose to decline cookies, some features of our Websites may not work as intended.
Some content on our Websites may be served by third parties that use their own cookies and tracking technologies. These third parties may collect information about your activities across different websites over time. You can opt out of receiving targeted ads from members of the following industry groups at:
- Network Advertising Initiative: optout.networkadvertising.org
- Digital Advertising Alliance: optout.aboutads.info
Text Messaging/SMS Consent
Some of our Websites may ask for your permission to send you text messages. Standard messaging rates apply, and message frequency may vary. Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
We treat your mobile information and SMS consent differently from other categories of information we collect. We will not sell, share, or provide your SMS consent or mobile information to third parties, except to service providers who help us deliver the messages. You can opt out of text messages at any time by texting STOP to (703) 682-9320 or emailing us at ksibori@staging.ij.org to confirm that you would like to opt-out of SMS messages.

You also may provide information to be published or displayed on a Website (“User Contributions”). User Contributions become public. We are not responsible for personal information that you choose to share in public areas of our Websites. Please exercise caution when deciding what to share.
You hereby grant to IJ the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, nonexclusive right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display all content, remarks, suggestions, ideas, graphics, or other information communicated to it through its Websites, and to incorporate any such User Contribution in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. IJ may use any User Contribution in its business (including without limitation, for products or advertising) without incurring any liability for royalties or any other consideration of any kind, and will not incur any liability as a result of any similarities that may appear in future Websites.
Children’s Privacy
Our Websites are not directed at children under 16 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you are under 16, please do not provide any information on our Websites. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 16 without appropriate parental consent, we will delete that information. If you believe we may have information from or about a child under 16, please contact us at privacy@staging.ij.org.
State-Specific Privacy Disclosures
Privacy laws vary from state to state, and the landscape is evolving. Some state privacy laws apply to nonprofit organizations, including in Colorado, Delaware, New Jersey, Oregon, Minnesota, and Maryland. If you are a resident of one of these states and believe you have rights under your state’s privacy law, please contact us at privacy@staging.ij.org. We will work with you to address your request in accordance with applicable law.
International Visitors
IJ does not specifically target or solicit visitors from outside the United States. However, if the processing of your personal information is subject to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or similar international privacy laws, you may have additional rights, including the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal information. To exercise these rights, please email us at privacy@staging.ij.org with “GDPR Privacy Rights” in the subject line.
